A daughter inspires mom’s wellness journey
A Pensacola mom turned to Ascension Sacred Heart to achieve lasting weight loss and improve her health through bariatric surgery for her family.
Marie had struggled with her weight for most of her life. By age 17, her weight regularly fluctuated between 250 and 300 pounds, and despite many efforts, she never saw it drop below 200 again.
After years of trying different approaches, including counseling and medication-assisted weight loss, this Pensacola mom began considering bariatric surgery. While medication initially helped her lose weight, side effects and medication challenges made it difficult to maintain long term.
Her daughter became one of the biggest motivations in her journey toward better health. Marie wanted to feel more active, present and confident as a mom, while also creating healthier habits for her family.
After struggling to maintain weight loss long term, Marie’s doctor referred her to Patrick Gatmaitan, MD, bariatric surgeon with Ascension Sacred Heart Comprehensive Wellness Center to learn more about bariatric surgery options and personalize her care plan.
During her consultations, Dr. Gatmaitan took time to thoroughly explain both gastric sleeve and gastric bypass surgery, helping Marie understand the benefits of each option in a supportive, no-pressure environment. She ultimately chose gastric bypass because it aligned closely with her personal wellness goals and was recommended as a procedure that may also help address her acid reflux symptoms.
“Weight loss surgery is not about perfection, it's about creating healthier, sustainable changes that improve a patient’s quality of life,” said Dr. Gatmaitan. “Marie stayed committed to the process, and it’s been incredible to see the progress she’s made for herself and her family.”
“The way Dr. Gatmaitan supported me through the process, really stayed with me,” Marie said. “He was so caring and supportive even during difficult moments for me.”
Since surgery, Marie has lost 80 pounds and no longer takes medication for high blood pressure or hypertension. Everyday activities have become easier, and she now has more energy to stay active with her daughter and family.
A recent family trip felt completely different than trips in the past with more energy, fewer breaks and more time enjoying the experience together.
Marie says the bariatric program also helped her build healthier habits and a better understanding of nutrition and portion control. Today, she feels confident sharing her story to encourage others who may be considering bariatric surgery.
